The Marang Yagangyang Festival was first held on September 1, 2016 in Barangay Colonia Divina, Sagay City. According to Festivalscape and SunStar Bacolod, the celebration was created through collaboration between barangay officials, the Sagay City government, Negros Occidental provincial officials, and local schools to help promote tourism and create additional income opportunities for residents during the lean season.
The festival’s timing coincides with the peak marang harvest season during August and September. Organizers also wanted to showcase the agricultural potential of Colonia Divina, where marang trees are cultivated alongside rice, banana, and pineapple crops.
In recent years, local officials have promoted the barangay as a possible “Marang Capital” of Negros Occidental because of the large number of fruit-bearing marang trees in the area.
