The Sinulog Festival traces its roots to Cebu’s conversion to Christianity during the Spanish colonial period. The festival honors the Santo Niño de Cebu, one of the oldest religious relics in the Philippines, believed to have been gifted by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana in 1521.
The word “Sinulog” comes from the Cebuano word “sulog,” which means “like water current movement.” The dance steps imitate the flow of river currents and remain one of the festival’s most recognizable traditions.
Today, Sinulog combines religious devotion with large-scale cultural performances and tourism events across Cebu City.
