The eve of All Saints’ Day, also known as October 31st, is recognized in the Philippines as a day for preparation and travel. Many Filipinos take the time to clean and decorate the graves of departed loved ones in anticipation of the November 1st observance.
While Halloween traditions such as costume parties and trick-or-treating are growing in popularity, especially in urban areas, the cultural emphasis remains on family and remembrance. Declaring it a special non-working day gives Filipinos time to prepare for their annual pilgrimage to cemeteries across the country.
